Trust depends on accountability and predictability.
The first results of the Online Interest-Based Advertising Accountability Program were published yesterday. The six companies were found to be out of compliance have made amends.
Without an accountability mechanism that works, there is little hope of fostering a system that creates and builds trust. We may not like be held up to inspection or it being noted when we are found lacking; but it is important that it happens. Even more important, is the fact that where error was found error was corrected. The point of an accountability program is not merely to point fingers, but to uphold standards.
This is an important step for promoting trust in online behavioral advertising; it is also an important step in the evolution of the self-regulation program the DAA is putting forward.
